The Mandela Effect
The Mandela Effect refers to a phenomenon in which a large number of people share either false or alternative memories of past events. Some have speculated that the memories are caused by parallel universes spilling into our own, while others explain the phenomenon as a failure of collective memory. It has been described as what happens when someone has a clear, personal memory of something that never happened in this reality.
Its origin is from a blogger, Fiona Broome, who in 2010 coined the term “Mandela Effect” to describe a collective false memory she discovered at the Dragon Con convention, where many others believed that former South African President Nelson Mandela died during his imprisonment in the 1980s. That year, Broome launched the site MandelaEffect.com to document various examples of the phenomenon.
“See, I thought Nelson Mandela died in prison. I thought I remembered it clearly, complete with news clips of his funeral, the mourning in South Africa, some rioting in cities, and the heartfelt speech by his widow. Then, I found out he was still alive.”
Additionally, Broome described other widely held false memories, including various nonexistent Star Trek episodes and the death of the Reverend Billy Graham.
Many people (mostly total strangers) seem to remember several of the exact same events with the exact same details. However, those memories are different from what’s in history books, newspaper archives, and so on.
This forum is for anyone wanting to learn more and delve further into the phenomenon. The purpose of this forum is to share, investigate, and discuss the nature, meaning and possible causes of the Mandela Effect.
Common Terminology
ME = Short for Mandela Effect.
Flip-Flop = When an ME reverts back to being how it was previously.
Residual = Evidence of how it used to be as people remember it.
Mandela Affected = People who have been affected by the ME phenomenon.
Mandanimal = An animal that people believe never previously existed.
Carina-Cygnus Arm / Sagittarius Arm = Many people affected by ME believe they are from the Sagittarius arm of the Milky Way galaxy instead of the Orion arm or spur.
Common Theory Terminology
Quantum Computing / Quantum Computers =
CERN = CERN is a European nuclear research organisation that operates the largest particle physics laboratory in the world. Established in 1954 and based in Geneva, many activities at CERN currently involve operating the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the experiments for it. The LHC represents a large-scale, worldwide scientific cooperation project. The LHC circular tunnel has a 27km circumference and is located 100 metres underground. The main site hosts a large computing facility, which is primarily used to store and analyse data from experiments, as well as simulate events. CERN is also the birthplace of the World Wide Web.
Multiverse = The multiverse (or meta-universe) is the hypothetical set of possible universes, including the universe in which we live. Together, these universes comprise everything that exists: the entirety of space, time, matter, energy, and the physical laws and constants that describe them. The various universes within the multiverse are called "parallel universes", "other universes", or "alternative universes"
Many-worlds Interpretation (MWI) =
Simulated Reality = Simulated reality is the hypothesis that reality could be simulated — for example by computer simulation — to a degree indistinguishable from "true" reality. It could contain conscious minds which may or may not be fully aware that they are living inside a simulation. This is quite different from the current, technologically achievable concept of virtual reality. Virtual reality is easily distinguished from the experience of actuality; participants are never in doubt about the nature of what they experience. Simulated reality, by contrast, would be hard or impossible to separate from "true" reality. There has been much debate over this topic, ranging from philosophical discourse to practical applications in computing.
D-Wave = D-Wave Systems is a quantum computing company, based in Canada. D-Wave is the first company in the world to sell quantum computers.
Quantum Immortality = There are an infinite amount of universes. Every time you die in one universe, your consciousness travels to the next one to continue living, this happens forever and you never die.
Common Psychological Terminology
Confabulation = In psychiatry, confabulation is a disturbance of memory, defined as the production of fabricated, distorted, or misinterpreted memories about oneself or the world, without the conscious intention to deceive. People who confabulate present incorrect memories ranging from "subtle alterations to bizarre fabrications", and are generally very confident about their recollections, despite contradictory evidence.
Cognitive Dissonance = The state of having inconsistent thoughts, beliefs, or attitudes, especially as relating to behavioural decisions and attitude change.
Confirmation Bias = The tendency to interpret new evidence as confirmation of one's existing beliefs or theories.
Misattribution of Memory = Misattribution of memory refers to the ability to remember information correctly, but being wrong about the source of that information.
Cryptomnesia = Cryptomnesia occurs when a forgotten memory returns without it being recognised as such by the subject, who believes it is something new and original.
Misconception = A view or opinion that is incorrect because based on faulty thinking or understanding.
False Memory = A false memory is the psychological phenomenon where a person recalls something that did not happen. False memory is often considered in legal cases regarding childhood sexual abuse.
Mandela Effects Definitions
I am unable to find coherent ME definitions and solid criteria that defines what are considered accepted Mandela Effects. A single definition seems too exclusive, so I will attempt to create some definitions and criteria for those definitions. These set of definitions can be referred to as “The Mandela Effect Forums ME Definitions Set”. It is hard to understand something, unless you can first properly define it.
Name: Established Mandela Effects
Definition: An established ME is one that it shared by hundreds if not thousands of people, has been around for a while (minimum of 6 months), is frequently discussed and has at least some residual evidence. If it meets all of these criteria, regardless of whether it has rational explanations, then it will be considered as an Established Mandela Effect with the exception that it isn’t a Mandanimal and therefore better categorised there.
Name: New/Potential Mandela Effects
Definition: Newly discovered or not well known potential Mandela Effects. These are effects that could be an ME or might not amount to anything. If enough people share the ME then it may graduate into another definition category. Otherwise it will remain here or be demoted to the Personal ME category.
Name: Mandanimals
Definition: An animal that a large number of people, including people within professional fields where there is an expectation of knowledge, report it not having ever existed, having been extinct or having been mythical. This category will not include animals that have been photoshopped and do not actually exist in reality. It will also not include rare mutations. If it does not meet these criteria, then it will remain in the New/Potential Mandela Effects category until it graduates to the Mandanimal category.
Name: Personal Mandela Effects
Definition: Mandela Effects that affect an individual or a set of connected people that is specific to that individual or set of people.
The Mandela Effect Forums
These forums are designed to be a place to collect, categorise, present and discuss everything related to the Mandela Effect. Our goal is to have a central place where everything can be gathered together and presented in a easily view-able and accessible form. With the help of the members and staff, we hope to achieve this ambitious goal. Finally, over time, we hope that through research, discovery and discussion, we will come to understand the real cause(s) of the Mandela Effect.
The Mandela Effect Forums Structure
As a general rule, staff will be collating, organising and presenting information as effectively as possible in header posts that will be made sticky. These will be updated with new information as required. This is to ensure that information for people new to the Mandela Effect can see pertinent information at the forefront quickly without having to dig out buried threads. This forum aims to make learning all about ME quick and easy.
The Mandela Effect Forums Position
Our bias leans towards the Mandela Effect being more than just psychological, however, we do not want to become an echo chamber and welcome constructive input respectfully communicated. The onus is on those of us who believe ME to be more than psychological to provide and analyse as much evidence as possible.
